Cables under load: the science of flame-retardant polymers.

Electrical wiring is the invisible foundation of a building's safety. When cables are under constant load, they generate heat. In the event of a short circuit or external fire, the chemical properties of the wire insulation determine how fast the fire spreads.

Understanding polymer ratings Not all PVC insulation is created equal. Standard PVC cables burn easily and emit thick black smoke. Building codes specify two key flame-retardant polymer ratings for modern wiring: 1. **Flame Retardant (FR)**: Wires designed to resist flame propagation and self-extinguish when the heat source is removed. 2. **Flame Retardant Low Smoke (FRLS)**: Wires that not only resist flames but also emit minimal smoke and acid gas, preserving visibility for evacuation.

The Science of Fire Resistance To be classified as high-performance flame retardant, polymers are tested against two critical metrics: * **Oxygen Index**: The minimum oxygen concentration required to support combustion. While air contains 21% oxygen, premium FR wires require an index of at least 29% oxygen to burn. * **Temperature Index**: The temperature at which the material will burn. Safe house wires must support a temperature index exceeding 250°C.
